別科圃場に設置した温度ロガーからの気温・地温データの読み出しと新しい測定の開始。

   10月の終わりに、別科圃場に設置してあった温度ロガーから気温と地温のデータを読み出し、電池と乾燥剤を更新してまた次の測定を開始しました。２年ほど前にWindowsパソコンの調子が悪くなり、そのままにしてあったのですが、情報処理センターのご好意により、OSを新しくして再び使えるようになりました。それで、温度データの読み出しもできるようになったわけです。Windows もMac もこの時期にはOSの更新などが要求され、大変な労力を使います。

   In the end of October, I have downloaded the data of air and ground temperatures from the data-loggers installed in the field of junior course. For downloading the data, windows-PC is necessary. However, my PC has been out of order since two years ago. Thanks to the courtesy of the Information Management Center of the university, I could re-fix my windows-PC, and could use the software for downloading the temperature data.

1) The end of red and yellow leaf season in Obihiro Green Park.

   11月1日の午後は内科クリニックでインフルエンザの予防接種を受けました。既に帯広の小学校ではインフルエンザによる学級閉鎖も始まっています。今日が予防接種の開始日だったので、クリニックは接種を受ける人たちでごった返していました。帰り道に緑ヶ丘公園に立ち寄って景色を見てきました。紅葉もほとんど終わりになりました。野草園は昨日で今期の閉園、百年記念館の企画展は明日からということで、景色だけを見て帰ってきました。

   On November 1, I underwent the vaccination for influenza in a clinic. In Obihiro, some classes of elementary schools have been closed due to influenza. The clinic was very crowded by the people who wanted to have the vaccination. The vaccination started just today. On the way back from the clinic, I dropped at the Obihiro Green Park. The season of red and yellow leaves has almost finished. The wild grass garden has been closed for this year season just yesterday. An exhibition in the centennial museum of Obihiro will start from tomorrow. So I just enjoyed the scenery in the Green Park.

   11月2日の午後は自転車で帯広緑ヶ丘公園に行き、美術館で開催されていた北斎展と百年記念館の新着作品展を見てきました。帰りはトテッポ通り沿いに帰ってきました。トテッポ通りにはまだ少し紅葉が残っていました。

   In the afternoon of November 2, I went to the Obihiro Green Park to see the art exhibition of "Hokusai" held at Obihiro Art Museum and also the exhibition of newly-arrived art works at the Centennial Museum of Obihiro. I rode my bicycle to and from the park. For my return route, I took the way along "Toteppo" alley which was formerly the railway track and turned to a passage for pedestrian and bicycle riders. Red and yellow leaves of maples still remained along the passage.

   11月3日は秋大根の収穫とマルチシートの片付けを行いました。秋大根はバレイショの収穫のあと種まきしたもので、あまり大きく育ちませんでしたが、夏大根と比べて辛くなく美味しいと思います。全部収穫したのではなく、雪が降るまで少しずつ収穫していくつもりです。畜大の白樺並木の葉はだいぶ散り、カラマツの葉が黄色く色づき綺麗でした。

   On November 3, I harvested the white radish which was sowed after harvesting potato. As it did not grow big, the taste is good. I have harvested only some of them, and remaining radish will be harvested little by little until it will snow. The leaves of white birch have almost fallen, and those of larch have turned yellow beautifully.

   朝の気温もだいぶ冷えてきたので、11月7日から8日にかけて、庭の植物に冬囲いを施しました。今朝は非常勤講師のために大学に行ったのですが、授業開始前8:30分の気温は２度でした。

   I covered my garden plants (grape vine, hydrangea, rose, clematis, and blueberry) with straw mats and plastic films to protect them from coldness during the coming winter. It has become very cold already especially in the morning. This morning, I went to the university to have a class of soil science and plant nutrition, and watched the digital thermometer placed in front of the main building. The temperature was as low as 2 degree at 8:30.

5) Human impact assessment in the forest of Obihiro.
帯広の森における人為的インパクト調査。

   11月10日はエゾリスの会が主催する帯広の森における人為的インパクト調査に参加しました。この調査は4〜５年おきに実施され、森の中の樹種や植生の分布を現地調査し地図の上に落とす仕事です。私はエゾリスの会の活動に参加してからまだ２年しかたっていないので、初めての参加でした。会員の中にはもう３０年近くも続けておられる方もおられてすごいことだなと思いました。私と帯広の森との関わりの最初は平成３年か４年の植樹祭に家族皆で参加して、苗木を１本植えたことです。エゾヤマザクラではなかったかと思いますが、その地点付近の木は皆大きく育っています。帯広の森の植林事業は1975年から始められ、エゾリスの会の活動は1986年に開始されたそうです。

   On November 10, I joined the human impact assessment in the forest of Obihiro conducted every 4-5 years by “Ezorisu-no-kai”. In this assessment, we survey the distribution of tree and vegetation types and make the distribution map. I joined this assessment for the first time, as it’s only two years since I participated in the activity of “Ezorisu-no-kai”. Some members have been continuing the activity more than 30 years. My first memory with the forest of Obihiro was the tree planting festival held in 1991 or 1992, which I joined with my family and planted a seedling of cherry tree. Trees in the area have grown very tall now.　The project of growing the forest of Obihiro was started in 1975 and the activity of "Ezorisu-no-kai" was started in 1986.

1) First snow on November 15.
11月15日の初雪。

   11月15日は非常勤講師の講義を１時間目に行いました。いちど家に帰って昼食を食べてから別科の圃場に最後まで残してあった大根を収穫しに行きました。とても小さな大根です。ついでにキャンパスの温度も見てきました。１時30分に2.0℃でした。今日の最高気温に近いと思います。その後雪が降り始め、今年のほぼ初雪となりました。

   On November 15, I had a class of Soil Science for the junior course students. After the class, I harvested the white radish remained in the field. In the afternoon, it started snowing. It was the first snow in this year.

2) Mini volleyball games on November 16 and December 4.
11月16日と12月4日のミニバレー。

   いつも昼休みに一緒にミニバレーを楽しんできた若い研究員の方が12月からアメリカの大学に留学されるとのことで、今日は送別会を兼ねてミニバレー大会を行いました。彼と同じ研究部門の仲間や留学生の皆さんもたくさん参加してくれました。ミニバレー大会の後は市内のフードスタジアムで昼食会を行いました。留学する彼の今後の活躍を祈りました。12月4日は、彼が昼休みにミニバレーに来てくれる最後の日でした。なごりを惜しみながらプレーをしました。

   On November 16, mini-volleyball game match was held in the gym of OUAVM. The match was held to see off our mini-volleyball club member who will start his post-doctoral fellowship in USA from December. Many of his colleagues also joined the game.December 4 was the last chance he could join the mini-volley game in the lunch time brake. We played the game while missing him heartily.

3) Activities of Ezorisu-no-kai on November 17 and 30.
11月17日と30日のエゾリスの会の活動。

   11月17日の午前中はエゾリスの会の活動の一環として、育成林中のツルウメモドキの除去、実生の野生植物を栽培しているプランターやポットの凍結からの保護（土に埋める）、観察小屋の窓に作られた小鳥の巣やスズメバチの巣のリセットなどを行いました。プランターを土に埋める作業では私の特殊技能が役立ちました。
   11月30日の午前中にも帯広の森の中でエゾリスの行動調査を行いました。５つのグループに分かれて行い、私のグループではエゾリスを見つけることができませんでしたが、他のグループはあわせて21頭のエゾリスを見つけることができたそうです。

   On November 17, I joined the activity of Ezorisu-no-kai to remove the vine trees in the forest area where we are helping the re-growth of natural trees. We also covered the seedlings of wild plants with soil so that they can survive the harsh winter.
   On November 30, we counted the number of Hokkaido squirrels in the forest of Obihiro. I myself could not find a squirrel, but other members could find 21 squirrels in total.

11月19日の散歩。

   11月18日には帯広では昼過ぎから雪が降り始め本格的な冬に突入した感があります。雪が降る直前にポットで栽培していたナデシコを庭の土に埋めました。ぎりぎりでセーフでした。ナデシコは種から育てたのですが、今年は花が咲きませんでした。二年草だったのですね。
   11月18日の雪は夕方雨に変わり、融けた後凍結したのであまり積もっていません。雪が凍ってアスファルトにくっついたので家のまわりの除雪には少し苦労しました。11月19日の夕方散歩に出ましたが、日没間際だったので森の方には行きませんでした。

   On November 18, we had a plenty of snow. Before snowing, I buried my plants in the soil in my garden. The snow changed into rain in the evening, and it was changed to ice next morning.　In the evening of November 19, I went out for walking.

11月24日の卒業生来訪。

   11月24日、私のところには、現役時代最後に担当した３人の女性の卒業生さんが会いにきてくれました。一人は結婚され、他の人はそれぞれの職場で頑張っています。久しぶりに会えてそれぞれの近況などを聞くことができてうれしかったです。
   来年の2月にまたミャンマーの大学で講義をすることになり、担当分野に気候変動に関連した分野も含まれているので、この数日は自分自身の勉強のため、今年発表されたIPCCのレポートClimate change and Land, Summary for policy makers (SPM)の翻訳をしていました。誤訳や未熟な訳も含まれていますし、これからも修正や追加をしますが、翻訳結果を私のホームページにもアップロードしました。興味のある方は見て頂けましたらうれしく存じます。

   On November 24, three ladies, who were my students in 2013-2015 visited me from various places in Hokkaido and the main island. I was happy to meet them again.
   In the end of February, next year, I will visit Myanmar again to give lectures in the Yezin Agricultural University. As the subjects related to "Climate and land" will be included in my list of lectures, I started to study this subject for myself. I translated the text of "Climate change and Land, Summary for policy makers (SPM)" which was published in this August. It was also uploaded in "My Lectures" in this home page.    11月27日の朝7:30の気温はマイナス3.1℃でした。段丘崖のミズナラは光を遮るものが無いので、太く立派に育っています。しかしこのように根本から枝分かれしているのは、開拓の初期にいったん伐採されてその後ひこばえから再び成長したものかもしれません。２枚目の写真は機関庫川の流れの中にゆれるバイカモです。
   下の段の写真は11月29日に写した春楡の木です。

   In the morning of November 27, the temperature was as low as -3.1 degree C. The oak trees on the cliff in the forest of Obihiro Agricultural High School are growing toughly and tall, but they are branched from the near-ground part. It may be because these trees were once cut down when pioneer farmers started cultivation in this area.
   The lower photos show elm trees in the Aikoku park, whose photos were taken on November 29.

   11月30日は早くから起きて、7:00からエゾリスの会による帯広の森のエゾリス行動調査に参加してきました。10月26日に雨でできなかった調査の替わりの調査でした。寒かったためか、エゾリスには１匹も出会えず、8:00頃調査を終えました。その後、森の山に立ち寄って山の景色を眺めました。

   11月30日はいったん家に帰ってから今度は真鍋庭園に行ってきました。こちらも朝早かったためか、他のお客さんはほとんどおらず、落ち着いて景色を楽しむことができました。

   It was also still early in the morning, and there were few visitors other than me. I could enjoy the scenes in the garden which will be closed for this year on December 1.

10) Very cold morning on December 6, and the walk on December 8.
12月6日の非常に寒い朝と12月8日の散歩。

   朝８時少し前のわが家の庭の気温 -12.5 ℃と８時30分少し前のキャンパスの気温 -8 ℃。今朝は非常勤講師としての授業を行いましたが、パソコンの起動がとても遅かったです。早めに教室に行っているので、授業自体には支障はありませんでしたが。

   A few minutes before 8:00 am in my garden, the temperature was as low as -12.5 degree C, while it was - 8 degree in the campus of OUAVM at around 8:30.
   In the morning of December 6, I had a lecture of Soil Science for the students of junior course. I was in the classroom already at 8:15, setting up my personal computer for the presentation. However, it took very long time before the computer started as it was almost frozen!. I just went out to take the photo of the digital thermometer in the campus, and went to the office to collect my lecture handouts, then came back to the classroom. The computer was ready for operation at that time.

  On December 8, I went out from 2:30 to 3:30. In the forest, a fox guided me the route walking around 50 m ahead of me. The outdoor temperature was -3.5 degree C when I started walking, but it was -5 degree C when I came home.

  12月8日は2時半から3時半頃にかけて散歩をしました。森の中ではずっとキツネが道案内をしてくれました。家を出る時の庭の気温は-3.5℃、帰ってきた時には-5℃になっていました。

2019年の年の瀬。

1) My birthday on December 9.
12月9日の誕生日。

   12月9日は私の68歳の誕生日でした。この日の朝も相変わらずに冷え込みました。朝７時頃、妻がゴミサークルを設置するために外に出た時にはマイナス16.7℃だったそうです。次に８時頃私が外に出た時にはマイナス12.3℃でした。

   I had my 68th birthday on December 9. The temperature was as low as -16.7 degree at 7:00 as checked by my wife, then it was -12.3 degree at 8:00 as checked by myself.

  I received lovely messages from my two grandchildren living in Chiba prefecture.

I have been interested in translating some climate related documents into Japanese in these weeks. Two computers are very convenient when I translate some documents, using one for reading the manuscript and another for writing the translation.

  デスクの写真には２台のパソコンが写っていますが、１ヶ月ほど前にウィンドウズのパソコンが回復したので、マックとウィンドウズを一緒に使えるようになりました。最近は気候変動に関する文献を趣味で翻訳していたのですが、一方に原稿を表示させ、他方で書き込みをするのにとても便利です。

12月11日の散歩中に見たタンチョウヅル。

   12月11日はだいぶ気温が上がり、０℃前後となりました。そのためか、野生動物もいつもより活発に活動しており、今日は散歩中にエゾリス、カケス、シジュウカラなどに加えて、タンチョウヅルまで見ることができました。タンチョウヅルは２羽のつがいで、デントコーン畑でエサを探していました。

   On December 11, it was warmer than usual, around 0 degree C in the daytime. I could see various wild animals, Hokkaido squirrels, jay and other small birds, behaving actively during walking. In addition to these common animal and birds, I could see two Japanese red crowned cranes in a dent corn field.

3) An encounter with the books of "Kako Satoshi".
かこさとしさんの本との出会い。

   左の「大地のめぐみ土の力大作戦」は2003年に出版された「かこさとし」さんの絵本、右の「みずとはなんじゃ？」は昨年2018年にかこさとしさんが文章を構成し鈴木まもるさんが絵を描いて出版された本です。かこさとしさんは長年にわたって子供用の科学の本を書いてこられましたが、昨年92歳で亡くなられました。数ヶ月前に偶然左の本を図書館で見つけ、自分でも購入したのですが、その後かこさとしさんについて調べ、最後に「みずとはなんじゃ？」を書かれてから亡くなられたことを知りました。図書館で借りてきて読んでみましたが、とても良い本です。自分でも持っていたいなと思いました。

   かこさとしさんは、会社に勤めておられた頃、フミン酸肥料（腐植酸肥料）の研究をされていたとのことです。私も卒論から博士論文までは腐植酸の研究をしていましたので、稀な縁を感じました。 「大地のめぐみ土の力大作戦」の著作にあたっては、元東京大学土壌学研究室教授の松本聡さんのアドバイスを頂いたそうです。

4) Selective tree felling in the forest of Obihiro　by "Ezorisu no Kai".
エゾリスの会による帯広の森の間伐作業。

   12月15日の午前中は、エゾリスの会による帯広の森の間伐作業に参加してきました。針葉樹を減らして森を明るくし、在来種の樹木の生育を助けることが目的です。プンゲンストウヒなどの大きな木を２本切りました。丸太は短く切って、野外用の椅子にしました。木にからまっていたツルウメモドキを使って大きなリースを作ってくださった方もおられました。

   On December 15, I joined the activity of Ezorisu no Kai to fell the trees in the forest of Obihiro. We cut the needle trees which are not native to this place selectively to help the growth of native deciduous trees. We fell two tall trees (Blue Spruce). Logged tree trunk was cut short to make outdoor stools. A lady member made a large wreathe using vines.

  会員の中に、伐採作業のプロの方がおられるので、大変助かります。他の会員は皆で伐採された木の枝落としをしました。

  畜大の私の研究室を卒業された方も活動に参加しておられましたが、来年から転勤だそうで残念です。

5) Walking in the evening and troubles of Windows computers.
夕暮れの散歩とウィンドウズパソコンに関するトラブル。

   しばらく気温の高い日が続いたので雪がだいぶ融けてしまいましたが、これからまた寒くなるそうです。最初の２枚の写真は夕方わが家の近くを散歩した時の写真です。

   最後の写真には２つのパソコンが写っています。上のパソコンは私が現役中に研究室で３年ほど使っていたパソコンですが、退職後家に持ってきてから不調になり２年ほど放置してあったものです。10月の終わりころにWindows 10 を新規インストールして再び使えるようになりましたが、いまだに起動が非常に遅く、時々「ドライブのスキャンおよび修理中」などという作業が起動時に始まってしまいます。なんとかならないかと思いますが、しばらく様子を見るしかありません。
   下のパソコンは私が授業用に使ってきた富士通のパソコンです。もう９年近く使っていますが一度も故障せず起動も速い良いパソコンです。Windows 7 なので来年早々セキュリティーのサポートが切れるとのことですが、インターネットにつなげずにパワーポイントを表示するだけならまだ使えるのではないかと思っています。ミャンマー にもこちらのパソコンを持って行こうと思います。

   妻を空港まで送って行った帰りに、昭和町付近からの日高山脈の眺めを写真に撮りました。午後には売買川まで散歩しました。堰に氷が張り始めました。その形が羽を広げた鳥のようでした。冬至の前日ということで、すぐに日が暮れてしまいました。

7) Field activities of Ezorisu no Kai on the winter solstice day in the forest of Obihiro.
冬至祭：帯広の森でエゾリスの会の活動。

   エゾリスの会の今年最後の活動。鳥類観察会、しばれ観察会、冬至祭。朝8:00から午後15:30まで帯広の森の中で楽しみました。今朝は久しぶりに雪が積もっていました。妻が昨日から孫を迎えるために本州へ出張しているので、一人で朝食をとり、家の周りを除雪してから帯広の森に行きました。軽く雪が降ったおかげで、景色はきれいでした。冬至祭は持ち寄りの野外パーティーでした。皆さんが持ってきてくださったものを、焚き火で温めて食べました。私は調理したものを持っていくことはできなかったので、お菓子を持っていっただけですが、皆さんの持ち寄りの品々を少しずついただくだけでおなかが一杯になりました。

   鳥類観察会。8:00 - 9:30. 今日は少なめでしたが、ヒヨドリ、シジュウカラ、ゴジュウカラ、ハシブトガラ、コゲラなどを観察しました。

冬の国見山。

   12月23日の午後は久しぶりに国見山に登ってきました。チャシコースから登り、外国の森コースを降りてきました。外国の森コースは国見山の外周を巡る長いコースですが、夏の間は道が泥濘化するため避けていました。冬になって土が凍ったため、なんとか泥に足を取られずに歩けるようになりました。泥道でさえなければ勾配もゆるくて登り降りしやすい良い道です。木々の葉が落ちたので木の枝の合間から周りの景色を良く見渡すことができました。

From the New Year Greeting of 2020.
2020年新年のご挨拶から。

1) Happy New Year.
明けましておめでとうございます。

   家の近くの機関庫川沿いの道や農業高校の森の中を散歩しています。エゾリスの会の活動にも参加し季節ごとの自然を楽しんでいます。 元の職場の仲間と週に４回昼休みにミニバレーをしています。
   帯広図書館に２週間に１回通い、少し多めの本を借りてきて、なるべく２週間で読み切るように頑張っています。
   定年後も別科の学生さんに土壌作物栄養学やその実習を教えてきました。冬は講義、夏は実習です。若い学生さんを相手に楽しくやらせてもらいましたが、今年の夏で終了となります。
   去年の2月にミャンマー の大学で土壌学の講義をしました。 私にとっても良い勉強になり刺激を受けることができました。今年も行くことになっています。
   ホームページの作成も続けています。
   今年も健康に気をつけて頑張りたいと思います。

  和文年賀状

   Enjoying walking along a small river or in the forest around my house. Joining the activity of a voluntary group, “Ezorisu no Kai”, to maintain the natural environment in the forest of Obihiro.
   Enjoying playing mini volley ball game with the friends at my former working place.
   Visiting the city library every two weeks, to continue reading books in various fields.
   Taught soil science and plant nutrition as well as its field practice to the young students as a part time lecturer. Field practice in the summer semester and the lectures in the winter semester. The practice in the coming summer semester will be my last duty.
   I gave lectures of soil science at the Yezin Agricultural University in Myanmar last February.
   It was a nice experience and I could have good memories. I will visit YAU again in February this year.
   I am continuing my home page.
   I will take care of my health and would like to enjoy a happy and peaceful year 2020 with you.

久しぶりの雪と寒い１日。

1) Snow after several days.

   帯広では昨日の午後から雪が降り、5cmほど積もりました。やはり冬には雪がないとねと、一安心しましたが、またしばらく雪は降らないようです。１月６日の昼頃には、強い西風によって乾いた畑から土ほこりが舞い上がり、「ちり煙霧」という現象が起きました。例年５月初旬には起こることがあるのですが、冬に起こることは極めて稀だったそうです。大切な畑の土がどれほど失われたのかと思うと、世も末のような気持ちでした。
   私は年末年始散歩もせずに過ごしていたら体重がかなり増えてしまいました。今週はミニバレーが再開して、毎日昼休みには通っていたのですが、ミニバレーだけでは運動量が足りないようです。

   １月１０日の朝は冷えこんで朝７時２０分頃わが家の庭の温度計はマイナス18℃を示していました。１時間目の講義があったので、講義開始前にキャンパスの温度計を見に行ったところ、朝８時10分頃にマイナス14.4℃でした。帯広市中心部にある測候所での気温よりもかなり低いようです。

   12月23日に国見山に登って以来久しぶりに散歩をしました。1月8日の雪のおかげで冬らしい景色を楽しむことができました。

4) Walking to see cranes and mergansers unexpectedly.
散歩中思いがけずタンチョウとカワアイサを見ました。Jan.12, 2020

   1月12日は農業高校の森を経由して売買川方面に散歩に行きました。昨年末にタンチョウのつがいを見た場所で今日も見ることができました。キツネが近づいて行ったので大きな声で威嚇していました。売買川ではカワアイサを３羽見ました。

5) Confirming the cranes, then walking along Satsunai river and Urikai river.
タンチョウを再確認後札内川沿いを散歩、そして再び売買川。Jan.13-14, 2020

   1月13日は機関庫川沿いから札内川堤防沿いを散歩しました。タンチョウは今日も同じところにいて、無事でした。タンチョウの他にも白鳥、アカゲラなどを見ました。1月14日もまずタンチョウの様子を見に行き、その後売買川の堤防を歩き、畜大と農業高校を経由して帰ってきました。タンチョウは十分エサをみつけられているのかどうか気になりました。

  昨日と同じ場所にタンチョウのつがいがいました。キツネには襲われなかったようです。

6) Cranes could be observed in close distance.
タンチョウを近くで見ることができました。Jan.16-17, 2020

   1月16日にはタンチョウがかなり車道に近いところまで来ていて、見かけた人も多かったのではないかと思います。噂になってあまり騒がしくなってほしくないなと思いました。帯広のわが家付近では毎朝マイナス20℃近くの冷え込みが続いています。農業高校の森の中を１日おきくらいに歩いているのですが、２日から４日前の自分の靴の足跡が溶けずにはっきりと残っています。

   1月17日にはタンチョウは機関庫川の川岸に来ていました。キツネもすぐ近くに来ていましたがタンチョウは平気なようでした。私以外にタンチョウを撮影している人もいました。タンチョウを見たのち、農業高校の森の湿地林部分を散策し、売買川堤防にも足を延ばしたあと、帰り道の夕暮れ時にもう一度タンチョウを見ることができました。あいかわらず機関庫川の近くにいました。

  1月16日にはタンチョウがかなり車道に近いところまで来ていました。

  1月17日。川岸まで来てタンチョウに近づくキツネ。その後タンチョウは川岸に上がり、かえってキツネを威嚇していました。

  1月17日。1)タンチョウのいる場所に向かう途中で見たキツネ。土の中のものを掘り出してかじっていました。2)タンチョウに手を出そうとしたもののいったんあきらめて場所替えをするキツネ。3)私のそばを平気で通り抜けるキツネ。

  1月17日。農業高校の湿地林の中。今の時期は地面が凍っていますし、草や低木の葉も枯れているので容易に中に入ることができます。早春にはザゼンソウの花が咲いて綺麗です。

  1月17日。帰り道の夕暮れ時にもう一度タンチョウを見ることができました。あいかわらず機関庫川の近くにいましたが、その後畑の方に帰っていきました。

   1月19日にはエゾリスの会の鳥類調査に参加しました。私は会の先輩の２人のご婦人と一緒に歩きました。ベテランになると鳥の鳴き声でどんな鳥が近くにいるかわかります。私は耳も遠くなってきましたし耳鳴りがすることもあるので、目で確認しないとわかりません。あいにく鳥の数は少ないようでした。

   午後にも２時頃から４時半頃まで散歩しました。マラソンの４分の１くらいのスピードでマラソンと同じくらいの時間歩いたことになります。２キロほど離れた郵便ポストに葉書を投函し、タンチョウを見て、機関庫川を川下に向けて歩き、機関庫川と売買川の合流地点を経由して売買川沿いを歩き、最後は再び農業高校の森と機関庫川に帰ってきました。途中機関庫川沿いに生えていたシラカバの木にはシジュウカラやエナガなどたくさんの小鳥が留まっていました。森の中を歩いているときにタンチョウの声が聞こえたので、最後にもう一度タンチョウの様子を確認してから帰りました。今日もタンチョウの近くにキツネがいました。タンチョウも人間とキツネにつきまとわれて迷惑なことだろうなと思いました。

  1月19日午前、エゾリスの会による鳥類観察。倒木が多く、いつもの道がわかりにくくなっているところもありました。

8) Cranes in snow.
雪の日のタンチョウ。Jan.20, 2020

   1月20日には久しぶりに午前中と午後のひと時に雪が降りました。私は除雪とミニバレーと散歩で日中の仕事（？）が終わりました。雪の中タンチョウの様子を見に行きましたが川の中にいました。雪が降ると畑でエサを探すのが困難になると思います。川で特定外来種のウチダザリガニをたくさん食べてほしいと思います。寒さが緩み始めたためか、やや湿った様子の雪をながめながら、農業高校の森の中を通って帰りました。

  1月20日午後、タンチョウは橋の近くにいました。

  エゾノヨロイグサの枯れた花の上に積もった雪やシラカバの木の下に落ちていた昆虫を写しました。

  農業高校の森の段丘崖沿いの道を歩きました。キツネ以外はまだ誰も通っていませんでした。

  1月21日午後、雪の次の日タンチョウはデントコーン畑にいました。車道に近い場所だったので多くの人に着目されていました。

   妻が高校の同級会に出席のため故郷へ向かうので、帯広空港まで送っていきました。空港までの道からは日高山脈がとてもきれいに見えるので帰りにいくつか写真を撮りました。

いくつかの小河川を横切る帯広市街北部の遊歩道。Jan.23. 2020

   １月２３日の午後はまずタンチョウを見に行きました。しかし、タンチョウはいませんでした。このひと月半ほどタンチョウが居た場所はヨシなどの草が生えておらず、営巣に適していないので、どこか良い場所を求めて飛んで行ったのだろうと思います。
  タンチョウの代わりに見たのはいつもの散歩道の上空を飛ぶ自衛隊のヘリコプターでした。この１週間ほどヘリコプターがよく飛んでいます。１月２８日の朝には８時頃からヘリコプターの音がしました。千歳と矢臼別で行われている日米合同演習と連動しているのかもしれません。ヘリコプターがタンチョウを驚かしたということも考えられないわけではありません。
  その後、帯広市街の北の方にある帯広小学校のそばの遊歩道まで散歩に行きました。帯広小学校はウツベツ川のほとりにあり、去年の12月初旬にヒグマが山からウツベツ川沿いにここまでやってきて、最終的に帯広小学校内の木に登っているところを駆除されてしまいました。帯広小学校付近のウツベツ川の川岸はかなり深くコンクリートの壁で固めてあったので、熊は川岸を歩いてきたのだろうと思います。この遊歩道をさらに進むと帯広川を横切り、国道３８号線を横切り、伏古別川に到達します。そこからもう少し歩けばもう十勝川でしたが、そこから先は遊歩道が無いし、夕暮れになってきたので、伏古別川から引き返しました。ヒグマが昇天した帯広小学校のすぐ北側には斎場もありました。しかしヒグマの斎場はここではなく、帯広畜産大学の解剖学教室だったそうです。

3) The last day of Japanese Cranes in the neighborhood.
近所でのタンチョウ観察最後の日。Jan.24. 2020

   １月２４日の散歩ではタンチョウを見ることができました。しかしこの日を最後にタンチョウはどこかに飛んで行ってしまいました。産卵と子育ての時期が近づいたのでどこかそれに適した場所を求めて飛んで行ったのでしょうか？タンチョウは広いヨシ原の中でヨシの茎をくちばしでちぎって大きなクッションのような巣を作るそうです。縄張り意識も強いので近くに他のつがいがいないことも必要です。どこか良い場所をみつけて巣を作り始めてくれていれば良いなと思います。

   １月２５日の散歩では今日は午後から国見山に登ってきました。展望台コースから登り、外国の森コースを降りてきました。尾根部では雪が少なくて歩きやすかったですが、登りは階段が凍っていて滑るので危なかったです。帰りの外国の森コースは緩やかでしたが、巨大な霜柱が土を持ち上げている状態が続くので、これも歩きにくかったです。

   １月２６日には町内会の総会がありました。そのなかでかなり時間をとって話題になったのは、町内会員と非町内会員の間の問題でした。町内会員はゴミステーションの管理、防犯灯・街路灯の管理、公園の清掃や草刈りなどの管理、子供会の運営と補助などを、会費を払い、労力を提供して行っているのですが、非町内会員はタダでその恩恵だけを要求するわけです。町内会長やその息子さんの家にも、ゴミステーションの利用に関して、非町内会員からヤクザまがいの脅しの電話がかかってくるとの話がありました。そのため今年の議案書には役員さんたちの電話番号は載せてありませんでした。町内会と懇親会ののち、いつものように散歩に行きました。タンチョウは２日続けていませんでした。機関庫川沿いに移動しているのかもしれないと思い、私も機関庫川沿いを歩いてみましたが、やはりいませんでした。産卵と子育ての時期が近づいたのでどこかそれに適した場所を求めて飛んで行ったのでしょうか？

   １月２７日には機関庫川沿いからハルニレ公園を経由し、札内川堤防までをを歩いてみました。ちょうど夕焼けの時間で夕日がきれいでした。

7) The first heavy snow in this winter.
今冬初めての大雪。Jan.30. 2020

   １月３０日、帯広では久しぶりに大雪が降りました。これでやっと平年並みくらいの雪の量でしょうか？一度にどっと借りを返すように降るところがいかにも十勝らしいと思います。今朝は市内某所に予約があったので、車が出せる程度に除雪したあと、やはり運転が億劫なのでタクシーに乗り、帰りはバスで帰ってきました。帰ってきてからまた除雪を続けました。腰が痛くなりかけたので、あまり無理をせずに少しずつ続けようと思います。

8) Japanese cranes came back again after one week of absence.
１週間ぶりにタンチョウが帰ってきました。Jan.31-Feb.1. 2020

   １月３１日、タンチョウが１週間ぶりに以前いた場所に戻ってきました。しかし２月１日には再びみかけませんでした。大雪が降ったのでタンチョウは餌探しに苦労してあちこち移動しているのかもしれません。雪が深いので散歩している人や公園で遊ぶ子供たちもほとんどいませんでした。

   ２月２日の散歩でもタンチョウの姿をみかけませんでしたが、機関庫川の堤防の上にタンチョウの足跡をみつけました。２羽のタンチョウが川へ向かう足跡と川から畑へ向かう足跡でした。ただしいつの足跡なのかはわかりません。今日は日曜日なので、「まなびの公園」ではたくさんの子供たちがそり遊びをしていました。

Visit to Akan International Crane Center.
阿寒国際ツルセンターの訪問。

   阿寒町で会議があったので行ってきました。JRと阿寒バスの組み合わせだと、朝一番のJR特急「おおぞら」に乗っても、午後１時の会議に間に合わないし、会議がおわってからの阿寒バスに乗ると帰りのJRに間に合わないという交通事情なので、高速道路利用で自家用車で行ってきました。しかし、往復自動車レースをしての日帰りは年寄りにとってはとても疲れるし危険なので、阿寒町で１泊させてもらいました。ということで時間がたっぷりあったので、国際ツルセンター、湿原美術館などを見学してきました。ツルセンターではたくさんのタンチョウを見ることができました。北海道のツルの数はかなり増加し、1400羽くらいに達したそうです。そのため今後はタンチョウの拡散をはかるため、ツルセンターでのデントコーンの給餌量も今までの半分に減らしているそうです。数が増えたのに餌が半分ではツルもお腹がすくでしょうが、過密による弊害を防ぐためにはしかたありません。しかし、ツルが生きていけるような環境を増やしてあげないとどうしようもないとも思いますが。

2月6日午後の散歩。

   畜大の現役教授の話によれば２月６日早朝の畜大での最低気温はマイナス29℃だったそうです。わが家の庭では朝７時50分にマイナス23.4℃でした。私より早起きした妻が７時１５分頃に見た時はマイナス25.5℃だったそうで、スマホでは写真がうまく撮れなかったと残念がっていたので私も外に行って確認した次第です。この日の散歩では雪が深すぎたので雪の中を歩くのはやめて、除雪された道を歩きました。機関庫川と売買川はかなり凍結が進んでいました。機関庫川付近にタンチョウはいませんでした。今はどこにいるのだろうと気になります。

  ２月７日の朝は非常勤講師としての講義があり、少し早めに着いたのでキャンパスの中を散歩しました。気温はマイナス15℃（家を出る時はマイナス19℃）でした。

   ２月７日の午後の散歩では、動物の足跡しかないような所を選んで歩きました。

  毎日同じ道ではつまらないので少しずつルートを変えていますが、２月８日の午後は農業高校の森の中を昨日に続いて歩きました。

  ２月９日は全道各地で今年一番の冷え込みと言われていましたが、庭の温度計はチェックしませんでした。午後の散歩中も風が強く耳が痛くなるような寒さでした。風が強かったので今日も森の中の道を歩きました。あちこちでアカゲラが木の幹をたたいており、写真に撮ることができました。

中札内村の大規模酪農組合の訪問と帰り道に見た夕焼け。

   2月13日は中札内村の大規模酪農組合を訪問しました。乳牛４０頭を一度に搾乳できる自動搾乳システムを見せてもらい非常に驚きました。４０台の搾乳ロボットが円形に配置してあり、それがゆっくりと回転しています。牛は１頭ずつ通れる入口から空いた機械の中に入り、１周すると搾乳が終わり搾乳ロボットから離れて出ていく仕組みです。搾乳中は牛の好物の濃厚飼料が食べられるようになっています。北海道で初めて導入されたシステムだそうです。音楽は流れていなかったけれど、クラッシックや童謡などいろいろ流してどんな曲が一番牛乳の量を増やすか比べてみても面白いですね。

   On February 13, I had a chance to visit a large scale dairy company in Nakasatsunai village. In the company, a very big round shaped milking robot was installed. By this system, 40 cows can be milked at the same time. The cows are fed with their favorite nutritious diet during the milking. Though there was no background music, I thought it would be nice if the company try various kinds of music from classic to children's songs to test which song is best for yielding larger amount of milk. On my way home, I could see the nice scenery of evening glow in the direction of Hidaka mountain range.

エゾリスの会による帯広の森の針葉樹間伐作業。

   今朝はエゾリスの会の活動で、帯広の森の間伐作業に参加しました。針葉樹を減らして、在来種の広葉樹の生育を助けることが目的です。ヨーロッパでは、再生された広葉樹の林は針葉樹の純林よりも土壌の生物的多様性が高いことが報告されています。

   This morning, I joined the activity of "Ezorisu-no-kai" to thin the forest of Obihiro by selectively felling the conifer trees. The purpose is to help the growth of native broadleaf trees. In Europe, re-established deciduous forest stands were shown to have higher soil biodiversity than pure coniferous stands.

帯広では大雪が降りました。

1) Heavy snow on February 17 and the walking in the afternoon.
2月17日の大雪と午後の散歩。Feb.17. 2020

   帯広では久しぶりに大雪が降りました。わが家の庭では30cm弱でした。午前、午後ともに除雪をしましたが、その後散歩にも行きました。ただし雪が深くて遠くまで行けないので、家の近くを歩きました。いつものように木の写真をたくさん撮ってきました。オリンパスのTG5というデジカメを使っているのですが、画像の中央部が白っぽくなることがあります。以前オリンパスに問い合わせてみたことがありますが、これはゴーストという現象でカメラの不具合ではないとの説明を受けました。でも結構ゴーストが現れる確率が高いので、どのようにしたら防ぐことができるのか知りたいです。

   We had a heavy snow after several days. It snowed around 30 cm in my garden. I was busy removing the snow both in the morning and afternoon. However, after the work, I went also for walking. As the snow was too deep, I just walked around my house. I took many photos of trees as usual. Sometimes my photos by Olympus TG-5 have a problem called "ghost phenomena". I do not know why does it occur.

2月18日の散歩。Feb.18. 2020

   今日も歩道を歩いて行ける範囲で散歩をしました。雪が深くて川の近くや森の中に行くことはまだ困難です。

   I enjoyed the scenes with plenty of snow from the sidewalk. Streams and forests are still hardly accessible due to the deep snow.
