Trip to Gifu prefecture to attend the assembly of former Japanese research fellows at IRRI (International Rice Research Institute, Los Banos, Philippines).
From September 1 to 3, I attended the alumni meeting of the former research fellows and post doctoral fellows at several different departments in IRRI around 38 to 45 years ago. The meeting was held at Gero Onsen (spa). 15 people including me joined the meeting. Most of us have been retired. We talked about the memories at IRRI and confirmed that the research life at IRRI was very important for our life career.
Because Gero Onsen was very far from my place, Obihiro, I stayed one night at Gifu city before forwarding to Gero, and enjoyed visiting Gifu castle on Mt. Kinka, and an aquarium for fresh water fish, “Aqua-Toto” in the suburbs of Gifu city.

On September 7, after one week since last Friday, I walked in the forest of Obihiro Agricultural High School. Many mushrooms could be found in the forest, as it rained this morning. The flower of Cimicifuga simplex which was still in bud last week was fully blooming today. The flowers of Aconitum have also started to bloom. Some plants and mushrooms which I saw today were poisonous.

I have a small garden in my house, where I grow some vegetables, flowers, apple trees and a grape tree. It is also a play ground for my grandchildren when they visit us. In this season, we can harvest green pepper, eggplant, mini-tomato, and cucumber. Mushroom also emerges among vegetables, which we enjoy in these years.

Attended the activity to record the living things in Utsubetsu river planned by the Centennial Museum of Obihiro.
On September 14, I attended the activity to record the living things in Utsubetsu river planned by the Centennial Museum of Obihiro. It was the 6th assembly and I attended three assemblies of them. We surveyed the same area as the first assembly in April.
Harvesting buckwheat on a fine fall day.
It was a typical fine day in fall on September 17. In the morning, I went to the mail post around 2.5 km far from my house through a park. I could find acorns of oak and Japanese horse chestnut are already ripe and falling on the ground. Hokkaido squirrels were busy feeding the nuts on the ground. In the afternoon, I harvested the buckwheat in the field of junior course in the university. Harvested buckwheat should be dried before threshed and processed further.

On October 10, Colchicum has bloomed in my garden. I think Colchicum is a messenger of winter already. The season of Cosmos flower is coming to end. Fruits of two apples, "Ourin" and "Alps-Otome" have matured. Bulbs of gladiolus have been dug out, because they can not pass the very cold winter outside. I also cleaned the plot where I grew sweetcorn, soybean, and radish in the university field.

Planting bulbs
On October 11, I planted the bulbs of daffodils, tulip and hyacinth in the flower bed of the junior course. Buckwheat was grown here in this summer, and the bulbs had been dug before the buckwheat was seeded. The residue of buckwheat and weeds were left on the surface of the flower bed, hoping they will be brought into soil and decomposed by earthworms and soil microbes. I hope these flowers will bloom successfully next spring.

Transplanting forest floor plants in the forest of Obihiro.
On October 12, I joined the voluntary activity of growing home-town forest by “Ezorisu no kai” (Hokkaido-squirrel favorer’s group). We transplanted the forest floor plants of native species in the relatively undisturbed forest area to the open area where trees had been cleared because the site was situated in front of the runway of Japanese self-defense army.
We have also transplanted the seedlings of forest floor plants which have germinated from the seeds collected last year into small pots. They will be transplanted on the cleared open area after they grow big enough maybe next year.
As the typhoon No. 19 was approaching Japan on October 12, we finished the 2 days work in one day.

Grapes harvested in my garden. When I came home in the evening, my wife was harvesting the grapes grown in our garden, before the storm will reach our place. As the harvested amount was too much to eat fresh by us, my wife will prepare grape jam.
Cleaning up the crops in my garden.
On October 13 and 15, I cleaned up the crops in my garden, as leaves of crops have started to wither due to the very low temperature in the morning.
I cut down fine the pruned grape vine and the stem and leaves of mini-tomato, eggplant, and green peppers, mixed them with cow manure compost and piled them up in the garden. Pruning was done by my wife.
I also planted the bulbs of daffodil and tulip in some places in the garden.
Soon I will have to set snow protectors to grape vines and roses to prevent the cold damage in the long winter.
